Super Bowl National Anthem Singer Slams Anthem Protesters in Moving Statement
BY C. DOUGLAS GOLDEN
Singer Gladys Knight apparently isn’t terribly impressed with the anthem-kneeling crowd — and she let everyone know it in a statement provided to Fox News.
Knight’s decision to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl in February had been a controversial one, as musical acts have been boycotting the game over the perception that Colin Kaepernick is being blackballed from the league.
Halftime act Maroon 5, for instance, has been turned down by several artists who they asked to appear with them during the show due to the Kaepernick controversy.
When rapper Travis Scott agreed to appear, he had a conversation with Kaepernick about his decision; while the two didn’t agree on the choice, Fox News says they “came away with a mutual understanding over why he would be performing.”
Knight, however, wasn’t quite as deferential to the former 49ers quarterback.
“I understand that Mr. Kaepernick is protesting two things, and they are police violence and injustice,” she said in her statement.
“It is unfortunate that our National Anthem has been dragged into this debate when the distinctive senses of the National Anthem and fighting for justice should each stand alone.
“I am here today and on Sunday, Feb. 3 to give the Anthem back its voice, to stand for that historic choice of words, the way it unites us when we hear it and to free it from the same prejudices and struggles I have fought long and hard for all my life, from walking back hallways, from marching with our social leaders, from using my voice for good — I have been in the forefront of this battle longer than most of those voicing their opinions to win the right to sing our country’s Anthem on a stage as large as the Super Bowl LIII.”
“The star concluded her statement saying she hopes the confusion of the two messages can blend into one lesson of unity for America, which she hopes to kickstart when she sings the anthem at the Super Bowl,” Fox News noted.
Representatives for Knight would not comment on the statement.
In an Op-Ed for Fox News, conservative commentator Todd Starnes said that Knight was “a freedom-loving patriot” who “called out those who have been trying to score cheap political points by disgracing the ‘Star Spangled Banner.'”
“Ms. Knight’s decision to perform is especially bold considering that most high-profile musical artists are boycotting the big game to kneel in solidarity with Kaepernick,” Starnes wrote. “US magazine reports that singers do not want to be associated with the NFL until the disgraced quarterback gets a job. So far — only Maroon 5 and a rapper I’m unfamiliar with have agreed to perform.”
“Billboard Magazine says Adele, Jay-Z and Pink refused invitations. So did Rihanna, proving when it comes to supporting our military and saluting the flag – America’s entertainment industry will always take a knee,” he continued.
“Even Cardi-B (sic) — a self-described disciple of Senator Bernie Sanders — took a pass. To be honest, I’d rather sit through Nickelback concert before I’d listen to a tone-deaf, foul-mouthed socialist who once called Bernie Sanders daddy,” he added, before walking back the Nickelback remark.
Trump Signs Key Anti-Human Trafficking Bill Into Law
By ALIYA KUYKENDALL
YouTube/The White House President Trump participated in a signing ceremony for anti-human trafficking legislation on Jan. 9, 2019. This was the last of four anti-trafficking laws signed in the past three weeks.
President Donald Trump signed into law the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2017 on Wednesday. This is the last in a series of four anti-trafficking bills the president signed in the past three weeks.
The White House also announced Wednesday that President Trump proclaimed January 2019 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. President Barack Obama first made this proclamation in 2010.
The bills Trump recently signed were needed to reauthorize the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) of 2000. The TVPA of 2000 stands as the cornerstone of federal human trafficking legislation. It must be reauthorized every few years, but expired in 2017. The most recently signed version of the law tightens criteria for whether countries meet minimum standards for eliminating human trafficking, or modern slavery.
Defining World Governments’ Anti-Trafficking Efforts
Under the TVPA, the U.S. State Department ranks countries in the annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report by whether they meet minimum standards for fighting slavery. If they do not meet standards, they are ranked on their recent efforts toward that goal.
In Tier 1, countries meet the minimum standards. In Tier 3, the lowest, countries don’t meet standards and haven’t made significant efforts to do so. Between stand the rankings Tier 2 and “Tier 2 Watch List.” These indicate those countries that have made recent efforts to improve.
Ivanka Trump, in her recent Washington Post opinion piece on the Trump administration’s anti-trafficking efforts, called the TIP report “the world’s most comprehensive resource for governmental anti-trafficking efforts.”
Under past versions of the TVPA, it was easier for offending countries to drag their feet on change. Before, a country could lift itself from the worst classification, Tier 3, simply by showing plans to improve. Legislators took a stronger approach this time. Now to move up from Tier 3, countries must show evidence of “concrete actions taken by the country” in the year of the reporting period.
Holding the Powerful Accountable
Why do these tiers matter? They’re a way the U.S. promotes global accountability for governments to fight slavery in their nations. Every year the State Department issues a Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. (See last year’s report here.) The TIP report gives a detailed explanation of the human trafficking situation in each country, along with its tier for the year. It explains what each government has done in the past year to improve. It also provides recommendations for further improvement.
In her op-ed, Ivanka Trump highlighted the president’s memo to the Secretary of State on Nov. 29. The memo limits certain types of aid to countries in Tier 3. They can still receive humanitarian aid and trade-related assistance, so long as the aid does not pass through or benefit the government.
“The United States is an extraordinarily generous nation, but this administration will no longer use taxpayer dollars to support governments that consistently fail to address trafficking,” Ivanka Trump wrote.
No Border Security Means No End to Trafficking
Wednesday’s signing took place the day after President Trump’s Oval Office speech on the need for a border wall. He drove the point home again. This time, he highlighted the practical impossibility of stopping traffickers from entering the U.S. without a strong border.
“You’ll go hundreds of miles where you’ll see pure open spots,” Trump said. He was referring to areas of the southern border with no physical barrier.
“If we don’t close them up, you’re all kidding yourselves,” Trump said. “We have to do what is right at our border. Human trafficking cannot be stopped if we don’t have a steel barrier or a concrete wall — something very powerful.”
Of the 1,933 miles of Southern border, 1,279 miles have no fencing. And the fencing that exists is inconsistent.
USA Today documented the entire border with an interactive map. The map also features helicopter videos. One shows fencing that abruptly ends in the middle of marshy Texas land.
“The Texas fencing is full of gaps,” USA Today found.
Trump said that in fiscal year 2018, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made more than 1,500 human trafficking arrests, “mostly sex trafficking.”
“We have the most talented law enforcement people in the world as far as I’m concerned,” Trump said. “It doesn’t mean a thing if they’re going to be driving women and children through sections of the border where nobody is — where you can’t be because you don’t have enough manpower.”
Pelosi and Dems Take Undeniable Ownership of Shutdown, Call Trump’s Compromise ‘Non-Starter’

President Donald Trump on Saturday proposed a much-anticipated compromise to end the government shutdown, but many Democrats have already rejected it.
In a fairly mannered and statesman-like address to the nation, Trump laid out the problems at the U.S.-Mexico border while extending an olive branch to liberals.
Offering to extend the controversial DACA program for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the country by their parents, he urged Democrats to work with him to find a bipartisan solution to the ongoing government funding situation.
“Trump announced that he was prepared to back a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 immigrants who came to the country illegally as children and were shielded from deportation under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program,” Fox News explained.
“This, in exchange for the $5.7 billion he has requested for a barrier on the southern border with Mexico,” the outlet continued
The president offered a similar compromise on the Temporary Protected Status program, which would help migrants fleeing places like Honduras stay longer in the United States.
But even before Trump had appeared on live television to deliver his proposal, key Democrats were declaring that they wouldn’t accept the president’s compromise, essentially tossing out his olive branch.
“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi came out ahead of the announcement to say the anticipated proposal comprised a ‘compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total, do not represent a good-faith effort to restore certainty to people’s lives,'” Fox stated.
“It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter,” Pelosi declared.
However, as the speaker of the House, she would likely be able to rally Democrat support for the compromise if she tried. It seems the liberal leader isn’t willing to give up a single inch of ground on the issue.
“For one thing, this proposal does not include the permanent solution for the Dreamers and TPS recipients that our country needs and supports,” she complained.
Democrat Senator Dick Durbin sent a similar message, rejecting Trump’s offer even before he had appeared on television and blatantly rejecting the president’s offer for a bipartisan solution.
“I cannot support the proposed offer as reported and do not believe it can pass the Senate,” Durbin stated, claiming that liberals would only consider the proposal if Trump first signed a budget proposal that ended the partial shutdown. This would mean the president giving up his one bargaining chip with no guarantee of a solution.
While public opinion has been split down party lines on who is responsible for the recent government shutdown, it’s hard to deny that Democrats are now the ones standing in the way of an agreement.
Trump’s Saturday announcement showed that he is willing to concede key policies to Democrats, with his offer to extend DACA a particularly important move. But if Democrats aren’t able to meet him halfway, they now appear petty and childish as the shutdown — and the border crisis — drags on.
The fact that liberals didn’t even wait to listen to Trump’s address in good faith before bashing his proposal does not put them in a good light. Despite a media frenzy to make the president look like an extremist, it now appears to be Democrats like Pelosi and Durbin who are putting partisan politics ahead of the American people.
Fox News Host Issues Perfect Response to Twitter’s ‘Expose Christian Schools’ Trend

A recent trending hashtag on Twitter provided a convenient excuse to publicly attack Christianity. The hashtag created an open season on sharing hate for Christians with no apparent consequences.
The #ExposeChristianSchools trend began following a CBS reportabout second lady Karen Pence taking a part-time job at a Catholic school where she had previously taught. A claim was made in the report that because the private school had lawful policies in accordance with biblical teachings, Pence was a bigot who was “cheering discrimination” against the LGBTQ community.
But then a video clip involving a young man wearing a MAGA hat and a Native American went viral on Twitter. This added to the attacks against Christians and Christian schools.

#ExposeChristianSchools is trending bc a group of idiot kids from a Catholic School, donning MAGA hats, insulted a Native vet. Now Leftists imply all Trump Supporters & Catholic Schools are like this & are doxxing the school & kids. Imagine if #ExposeMuslimSchools was trending?

Although the bashing of Christian schools was brutal, some people noticed and pointed out an obvious fact: A lot of the claims also applied to some public schools.

Since there is #ExposeChristianSchools, we should also have #ExposePublicSchools. I can guarantee that absurd and offensive things are not isolated to Christian schools alone. Smh.

Shannon Bream, a Fox News Host, jumped into the fray to defend Christian schools. The personal experience she shared delivered a powerful punch to the hateful rhetoric pushed on the social media platform.

#ExposeChristianSchools I was surrounded by people who cared about me as a human being, not just a student. I got a top notch education that allowed me to graduate magma cum laude undergrad and w honors from law school. It wasn’t perfect, but there was a high standard and love.

Bream was not alone in praising the education and support received at a Christian school. Others on Twitter also defended such schools, sharing stories about their own experiences and how they benefited from attending Christian schools.

I graduated from a small Christian school and tested out of a ton of English and Math classes in college. I knew how to write better than 90% of my peers that came out of public schools. Many of them had never even written an essay prior to college. #ExposeChristianSchools

I went to a private Catholic school. They taught AP classes, graduated every student, outperformed public schools and taught Christian values like loving thy neighbor. It set me up to do well in life. So, yes, let's #ExposeChristianSchools

I credit a lot of my success today to the fact that I attended a Catholic school for most of my life. The lefts hatred of Christianity is disgusting and the fact that #ExposeChristianSchools is trending on Twitter is terrifying.

#ExposeChristianSchools Imagine how awful it is to teach children that God loves them & has a plan for their life... all the while educating them to high academic standards so they are successful, contributing members of society after graduation. The horror!
Some parents chimed in, as well. They shared how their children have benefited from Christian school education.

If I could send my kids to Christian grade level schools I would. However, my oldest is going to a Christian Conservative college, Harding University. She’s having a great experience there just as I did. She’s matured so much, the professors care, & amazing opportunities!

Sent my 3 kids (30,33,35 yrs old now) to multicultural private Christian schools. Whites were minority. Education & relationships were great, music & sports were #1. Result: kind, considerate, intelligent, talented, hilarious, knowledgeable, hardworking, street smart adults.

One theme that came up a lot in the defense of Christian schools was the higher level of education. Some had attended both private and public schools and saw the difference between them. Twitter user Randy posted an entire thread about it, carefully making the case in defense of Christian schools.
These Twitter users are not alone in their assessment. A 2013 study revealed that “Private religious schools perform better than public schools, and public charter schools performed no better than regular public schools,” according to The Christian Post.
There will always be bad teachers and bad schools out there, in both the pubic and the private arena. To zero in on private Christian schools, as if they teach evil and abuse the students, is ridiculous and wrong. It is, in and of itself, bigotry—that thing those posting such tweets claim to be against.
Betsy DeVos breaks pelvis, hip socket in bicycle accident
by Jerry McCormick
Cycling accidents and politicians seem to be the norm lately.
Only weeks after a California mayor collided with a vehicle while riding his bicycle, it has now been reported Education Secretary Betsy DeVos also recently suffered serious injuries while cycling.
Nasty Accident
While the full details of the accident have not been revealed, it is quite clear it was a very serious accident.
DeVos, who is 61-years-old, suffered a broken pelvis and hip socket while road cycling.
She recently underwent surgery for the injury.
The injury apparently initially happened on January 4, but her office kept it quiet.
When DeVos showed up for a recent appearance in a wheelchair, she drew more than a few curious stares.
DeVos is expected to make a full recovery, though she described it as “very painful.”
“But it will heal,” she said while speaking at an entrepreneurship event in Washington. “I just have to stay off of it for quite a few weeks, so I’m getting around with other means.”
Cycling Accidents a Real Problem in the United States
More people than you would think are killed or injured every year while riding their bike.
There has been an obvious emphasis in recent years to create bike-friendly cities, but the danger is still high.
In 2015, more than 800 cyclists were killed in bike vs. car accidents.
In all, there were roughly 45,000 accidents reported involving cyclists that year.
While efforts have been made to provide safer riding areas for cyclists, there are still far too many drivers who simply do not pay enough attention to cyclists on the road or don’t respect the bike lanes.
Today, we have far more people commuting to work in big cities via bicycle, so these numbers are not likely to make a downswing any time soon.
Hopefully, DeVos’s injury creates more awareness and our local politicians begin to seriously address an issue that seems to be getting worse every year.
