Lydia Kang, author of TOXIC, on feeling like a book wrote itself
We're thrilled to have Lydia Kang join us to share more about her latest novel, TOXIC.Lydia, how long did you work on TOXIC?
I wrote TOXIC over the course of six months, but it took several revisions to get it just right. I had a blast. It felt like it wrote itself!
What did this book teach you about writing or about yourself?
It did. I really got a chance to explore more fully the diasporic experience of my own life in this book. Hana, the main character, is ethnically Korean, but her culture is a mash of what she's learned, and what her mother has taught her in isolation. I really spent a lot of time thinking about identity for those who are not native born within their ethnic countries of origin.
How long or hard was your road to publication? How many books did you write before this one, and how many never got published?
I wrote two books before my first one, CONTROL, was published. After my first publication, I've written two other books that never got published. That's hard, but not every book makes it, even after you get your foot in the door.

Entangled: Teen
Released 11/6/2018
Hana isn't supposed to exist. She's grown up hidden by her mother in a secret room of the bioship Cyclo until the day her mother is simply gone―along with the entire crew. Cyclo tells her she was abandoned, but she's certain her mother wouldn't leave her there to die. And Hana isn't ready to die yet. She's never really had a chance to live.
Fenn is supposed to die. He and a crew of hired mercenaries are there to monitor Cyclo as she expires, and the payment for the suicide mission will mean Fenn's sister is able to live. But when he meets Hana, he's not sure how to save them both.
As Cyclo grows sicker by the day, they unearth more secrets about the ship and the crew. But the more time they spend together, the more Hana and Fenn realize that falling for each other is what could ultimately kill them both.
