We're thrilled to have Lydia Kang join us to share more about her latest novel, TOXIC.

Lydia, how long did you work on TOXIC?

I wrote TOXIC over the course of six months, but it took several revisions to get it just right. I had a blast. It felt like it wrote itself!

What did this book teach you about writing or about yourself?

It did. I really got a chance to explore more fully the diasporic experience of my own life in this book. Hana, the main character, is ethnically Korean, but her culture is a mash of what she's learned, and what her mother has taught her in isolation. I really spent a lot of time thinking about identity for those who are not native born within their ethnic countries of origin.

How long or hard was your road to publication? How many books did you write before this one, and how many never got published?

I wrote two books before my first one, CONTROL, was published. After my first publication, I've written two other books that never got published. That's hard, but not every book makes it, even after you get your foot in the door.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR 

Lydia Kang is an author of young adult fiction, adult fiction and non-fiction, and poetry. She graduated from Columbia University and New York University School of Medicine, completing her residency and chief residency at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. She is a practicing physician who has gained a reputation for helping fellow writers achieve medical accuracy in fiction. Her poetry and non-fiction have been published in JAMA, The Annals of Internal Medicine, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Journal of General Internal Medicine, and Great Weather for Media. She believes in science and knocking on wood, and currently lives in Omaha with her husband and three children.
