First reading on first-quarter GDP up 2.3%, vs 2.0% growth expected

  • The U.S. economy slowed in the first quarter as consumer spending grew at its weakest pace in nearly five years.
  • The setback is likely temporary against the backdrop of a tightening labor market and large fiscal stimulus.
  • Gross domestic product increased at a 2.3 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said.
Big rigs, trucking, GDP growinng, US economy
First quarter GDP up 2.3% vs. up 1.8% est.
The U.S. economy slowed in the first quarter as consumer spending grew at its weakest pace in nearly five years, but the setback is likely temporary against the backdrop of a tightening labor market and large fiscal stimulus.
Gross domestic product increased at a 2.3 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said in its snapshot of first-quarter GDP on Friday, also held back by a moderation in business spending on equipment and investment in home building.
The economy grew at a 2.9 percent pace in the fourth quarter. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast output rising at a 2.0 percent rate in the January-March period.
The first-quarter growth pace is, however, probably not a true reflection of the economy, despite the weakness in consumer spending. First-quarter GDP tends to be sluggish because of a seasonal quirk. The labor market is near full employment and both business and consumer confidence are strong.
Economists expect growth will accelerate in the second quarter as households start to feel the impact of the Trump administration's $1.5 trillion income tax package on their paychecks. The tax cuts came into effect in January.
Lower corporate and individual tax rates as well as increased government spending will likely lift annual economic growth to the administration's 3 percent target, despite the weak start to the year.
Federal Reserve officials are likely to shrug off tepid first-quarter growth. The U.S. central bank raised interest rates last month in a nod to the strong labor market and economy, and forecast at least two rate hikes this year.
Minutes of the March 20-21 meeting published earlier this month showed policymakers "expected that the first-quarter softness would be transitory," citing "residual seasonality in the data, and more generally to strong economic fundamentals."
Growth in consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, braked to a 1.1 percent rate in the first quarter. That was the slowest pace since the second quarter of 2013 and followed the fourth quarter's robust 4.0 percent growth rate.
Consumer spending in the last quarter was undercut by a decline in purchases of motor vehicles, clothing and footwear as well as a slowdown in food and beverages outlays. This likely reflects delayed tax refunds.
According to surveys, the tax cuts did not reflect on many workers' paychecks until late in the first quarter. Income at the disposal of households increased at a 3.4 percent rate in the first quarter, accelerating from the fourth quarter's 1.1 percent pace. Households also boosted savings during the quarter.

Business spending cools

Business spending on equipment slowed to a 4.7 percent rate in the January-March quarter after double-digit growth in the second half of 2017. The cooling in equipment investment partly reflects a fading boost from a recovery in commodity prices.
Economists expect a marginal impact on business spending on equipment from rising interest rates and more expensive raw materials.
Investment in home building was unchanged in the first three months of the year, reflecting a decline in brokers' commissions as an acute shortage of properties hurt home sales. Residential construction increased at a 12.8 percent rate in the October-December period.
Government spending grew at a 1.2 percent rate, slowing from the fourth quarter 3.0 percent pace. Spending is expected to accelerate in the second quarter after the U.S. Congress recently approved more government spending.
Trade added 0.20 percentage point to GDP growth as rising exports offset an increase in imports that was driven by royalties and broadcast license fees related to the Winter Olympics. A weak U.S. dollar and strengthening global economy are boosting exports.
With consumer spending slowing, inventories increased at a $33.1 billion rate in the first quarter, up from a $15.6 billion pace in the prior period. Inventory investment contributed 0.43 percentage point to GDP growth after subtracting 0.53 percentage point in the fourth quarter.

Italian police report: Libyan migrants threw Christians overboard

Italian police report: Libyan migrants threw Christians overboardImage via Clari Massimiliano
You know those migrants Democrats want to open our border to?
Well, a group of them just threw a dozen Christian passengers overboard during an escape voyage from Libya to Italy.

The Journey

A group of 105 people got on a boat in Libya to find greener pastures.
The boat was headed to Italy.
According to the report, a group of more than a dozen Muslims passengers were angered because there were Christians on the boat with them.
The group started to throw the Christians overboard.
The only reason the terror stopped was because the rest of the passengers formed a wall to stand up to the murderers.
The police report stated the Muslims in question were from Senegal, Mali, and the Ivory Coast.
The boat carrying the passengers was found by an Italian Navy ship.
After rescuing the passengers, the Italian Navy transferred the passengers to a Panamanian ship.
That boat continued on to Palermo, where it was met by Italian Police.
It would appear as though the other passengers informed someone on that ship as to the atrocity that took place at sea, because 15 individuals were arrested when the ship docked.

The Liberal Narrative

The Italian Coast Guard reported more than 10,000 migrants have come to their shores in a little more than week!
The conditions of these countries are so bad people literally risk their lives to get out.
The International Organization for Migration has reported more than 3,000 people have died making this journey during the last year.
But, even after leaving such horrid conditions, they come to our country and complain about it.

Major U.S. cities on track to potential record cold April

Wednesday, April 25, 2018, 15:06 - Those in the northern tier of the U.S. either graciously accept winter with open arms or drag their feet the entire way. So, for those who would willingly trade in the snow for sand, it's been a rough season that has been painfully etched into our memories after the ice storm that rolled through the Great Lakes just weeks ago.
For some communities, April won't just be memorable... it will might just go down in history. How? Well there are so many fascinating statistics to swoon over that we dug up! While doing some number crunching for Detroit Metropolitan International Airport, it wasn't an eye opener that April has been about 10 F below seasonal. The normal monthly average daytime high is 59.1 F, we only got 49.7 as an average. Another stat that won't come as a surprise is the lack of warmth -- we have yet to crack 70ºF more than once this April in Detroit, Chicago and Buffalo!

FLUCTUATIONS INTO MAY

Taking the final forecast days of April into consideration, we're currently seeing a slight warm up that could help the averages take a slight bump up. Of course we will have to wait until the end of the month to officially declare it as 'the coldest April on record' as some minor fluctuations in the forecast will occur.
The overall weather pattern that we can blame is the jet stream that keeps taking a ride well to the south ushering cold Canadian air to the U.S. In fact, it's been cold enough that we saw ice pellets accumulating in the middle of the month for the Southern Great Lakes.
It seems we are definitely warmer as of late, but we have really yet to see a pattern shift that promotes above seasonal temperatures the whole month. We may need to wait until mid-May to get on the plus side of seasonal.
The good news is the sun is stronger and higher in the sky and the averages climb climatologically in the Spring. In other words, we warm up regardless of being below seasonal or not!

IS GLOBAL WARMING TO BLAME FOR 'WEIRD' APRIL?

A common misunderstanding with global warming is that it should mean every single location heats up equally and we should never experience cold if our world is warming. As you can imagine, our atmosphere and the intertwined processes are complex. It isn't a simple cause and effect relationship and it's easy to treat weather and climate as the same entity. To understand the important difference, watch the video below.

Texas State Senator Pushes Removal of ‘Noncitizens’ from Voter Rolls

One Texas lawmaker asked election officials to clean up their voter rolls from “illegal voting by non citizens” in a county that has been plagued with a host of voter fraud allegations and investigations.

State Senator Don Huffines (R-Dallas) voiced concerns over “illegal voting by non citizens” this week in a letter to Dallas County elections officials. He called upon County Clerk, the Honorable John Warren, and Elections Administrator Toni Pippins-Poole to update the public on their progress in removing noncitizen voting registrants.
“A fraudulent vote not only cancels out a legitimate one, but also casts doubt over the entire system, sowing distrust in government and dampening voter turnout,” wrote Huffines, citing the Texas Election Code which “requires United States citizenship in order to vote.”
He questioned Warren and Pippins-Poole if the county was acting in compliance with state law and election codes that call for “monthly compilation of a list of noncitizens registered to vote” as well as the cancellation of illegal voters. Huffines asked how many voters they removed for non citizenship over the past decade and if any of the registrants voted illegally in federal, state, and/or local elections. He even inquired as to which elections these non citizens voted. Lastly, he queried elections officials if they reported this “illegal conduct” to the Dallas County District Attorney or the Texas Attorney General’s offices.
The letter cited a report by the Texas Conservative Coalition Research Institute (TCCRI), which identified that between September 1999 to March 21, 2007, Dallas County cancelled the voter registrations of 1,889 noncitizens registered to vote. The report highlighted that before canceling these individuals from the voter rolls, 356 of them already voted in county elections.
Last year, a judge sentenced Rosa Maria Ortega, a Mexican national, to eight years in prison for “illegal voting.” She cast ballots in numerous Dallas County elections over 10 years, unaware that she was not a U.S. citizen but a U.S. resident and, therefore, ineligible to vote.
The letter also referenced a four-county survey conducted by the Office of the Attorney General, revealing 165 “unlawfully registered noncitizen voters” were removed from the voter rolls but prior to identifying themselves as noncitizens at jury duty, this group of 165 cast 100 illegal votes in Texas elections.
More recently, Texas AG Ken Paxton noted “the process for removing ineligible voters who self-report as noncitizens at jury duty is not being followed correctly, or even at all in various counties.”
Although Huffines said he remains “encouraged” by Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson and her office’s investigations into voter fraud claims, he believes the public deserves to know what steps local election officials are taking “to ensure our elections are fair, and free from fraud and undue influence.”
Dallas County voter fraud largely has reflected suspicious mail-in ballots, which overshadowed two election cycles. Breitbart Texas reported Pippins-Poole sequestered roughly 700 suspicious absentee ballots, temporarily freezing the results of a May 2017 local election. Months later, the suspect accused of forging signatures on these ballots was indicted. In response, lawmakers passed Senate Bill 5 to stiffen up penalties for voter mail fraud. Even so, in March 2018, Johnson’s office investigated more than 1,200 questionable mail-in ballot applications. Then, the losing Democrat challenger in the primary race for Dallas County DA sued the winning Democrat candidate and others, alleging voter fraud.
To date, 13 Texas counties have more registered voters than eligible residents, according to the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), a national election integrity law firm. On Wednesday, the Foundation tweeted supporting Huffines’ actions in “raising awareness to noncitizen voting in Dallas County.” The watchdog nonprofit noted, “Verifying citizenship in registration is long overdue and Texas has a golden opportunity to build a model for others to follow.”
Good on @DonHuffines for raising awareness to noncitizen voting in Dallas County, #TEXAS. Verifying citizenship in registration is long overdue and TX has a golden opportunity to build a model for others to follow.
In March, Breitbart Texas reported the Foundation filed a lawsuit against Harris County for allegedly failing to disclose noncitizen registered voter records as required by the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA), more commonly known as the “Motor Voter” law. At the time, PILF President and General Counsel J. Christian Adams commented, in part: “Election officials should be transparent. Our requests to inspect records will help educate lawmakers and the public alike on how noncitizens are gaining entry into the voting system; how long they remain; how they vote; and what we can do to fix the issue.”
Since then, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton urged a state court judge to facilitate the Foundation’s request after Harris County sued over a relatively unfavorable ruling that noncitizen records should be disclosed under Texas law. Both federal and state lawsuits for Harris County records continue to date.
The PILF also put Bexar County on federal notice for failing to disclose noncitizen registered voter records.
In a prepared statement, Huffines says he plans to file legislation that requires verification of citizenship in the voter registration process. He said, “Texans deserve much more than the careless, haphazard enforcement” of existing voting provisions.
“When the Texas Legislature convenes in 2019, I will file legislation to verify the citizenship of every single applicant who registers to vote. It’s an outrage that such a common sense step isn’t being currently utilized to secure our elections.”
Huffines represents Senate District 16, which comprises a substantial geographic area in northern Dallas County.

AP ‘Fact Checker’ Humiliated After North Korea Announces Plans to Denuclearize ~ Trump 1-AP 0

TEL AVIV — In an article published by major U.S. newspapers, the Associated Press last Sunday claimed Donald Trump was inaccurate when he tweeted that day that North Korea had agreed to “denuclearization” ahead of a future summit between himself and Kim Jong Un.

Today, Trump’s tweet was proven to be true when the North Korean leader and South Korean President Moon Jae-in both signed a joint statement that specifically agreed to “complete denuclearization.”
“The South and the North confirmed their joint goal of realizing a Korean Peninsula free of nuclear weapons through complete denuclearization,” reads the statement.
The statement was vague and did not offer specifics on “complete denuclearization”, but the declaration nonetheless represents the shifting of the tectonic plates on the Peninsula after nearly six decades of war.
And the specific phraseology proves Trump’s tweet below about “denuclearization” to be accurate.
Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd of Fake News NBC just stated that we have given up so much in our negotiations with North Korea, and they have given up nothing. Wow, we haven’t given up anything & they have agreed to denuclearization (so great for World), site closure, & no more testing!

Failing to recognize that Trump may have been tweeting about commitments not yet released to the public, the Associated Press last Sunday released a widely-published article charging Trump’s “denuclearization” claim was untrue.  The piece, datelined in West Palm Beach, where Trump was staying at the time, was authored by Jill Colvin.
The New York Times picked up the AP story, titling the piece, “Trump Says North Korea Agreed to Denuclearize. It Hasn’t.”
“Trump says North Korea agreed to denuclearize. It hasn’t,” was also the title of the Chicago Tribune version of the piece.
ABCNew.com used the same title.
Time picked up the wire under the slightly modified title, “President Trump Says North Korea Agreed to Denuclearize. It Hasn’t.”
The AP article, which was disproven on today, claimed:
President Donald Trump on Sunday claimed North Korea has agreed to “denuclearization” before his potential meeting with Kim Jong Un. But that’s not the case.
North Korea said Friday it would suspend nuclear tests and intercontinental ballistic missile launches ahead of summits with the U.S. and South Korea. Kim also said a nuclear test site would be closed and “dismantled” now that the country has learned how to make nuclear weapons and mount warheads on ballistic rockets.
But the North has stopped short of saying it has any intention of abandoning its nuclear arsenal, with Kim making clear that nukes remain a “treasured sword.”
Besides the AP, PolitiFact used general headlines on Sunday to pronounce of Trump’s now provably accurate “denuclearization” tweet: “We rate this claim False.”

Wiseass Rep. Jerrold Nadler, Who Called Social Media Censorship a ‘Hoax,’ Received Over $20K from Google
by CHARLIE NASH

Jerrold Nadler
The Associated Press

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee who claimed allegations of social media censorship against conservatives were “baseless” and a “hoax,” on Thursday, received over $20,000 from Google parent company Alphabet between 2017 and 2018 alone, and received thousands more in previous years. Signed, sealed and delivered. Attaboy Gerry.

According to Open Secrets, Nadler received a total of $20,800 from Alphabet Inc. between 2017 and 2018, and a total of $18,350 between 2013 and 2014.
Records from the Federal Election Commission also reveal that Nadler has received regular disbursements from the Google Inc. NetPac in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, usually totalling $10,000 a year.
Alphabet Inc. was the highest contributor to Nadler’s campaign and leadership PAC in 2018, while Facebook also donated $2,500.
During a hearing on social media censorship before the House Judiciary Committee, Thursday, Nadler claimed censorship against conservatives was a conspiracy theory and a “hoax.”
“The notion that social media companies are filtering out conservative voices is a hoax,” declared Nadler, adding that allegations of a “Silicon Valley plot to censor conservatives” was “baseless.”

Mike Huckabee: Shameful UK Treats Babies from Opposite Classes Differently

By Bill Hoffmann  AP

Mike Huckabee has taken a slap at the British government for gushing over the birth of Prince William and Kate’s new baby boy while strong-arming a frantic mom and dad as removed it life support from their ailing 23-month-old son.
"Tragically, there has never been a starker illustration of the difference in importance placed on two babies' lives than you’ll see today in Britain," the former Arkansas governor and two-time GOP presidential candidate wrote Friday on his blog MikeHuckabee.com.
"The official celebration of the birth of a royal baby and the heartbreaking battle of two everyday parents to save their baby from being condemned to die by that same government’s arrogant health care system.
"On the very day the nation was celebrating the Royal baby, the UK government was removing the life support system from 23-month-old Alfie Evans and stationing a line of police to keep his frantic parents from trying to move him to another hospital that would grant him care."
Courts in Great Britain ruled Alfie’s father and mother are not legally allowed to take their son to Italy for treatment. Tom Evans and his wife had planned to take their child to the Vatican's Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital.
And the Washington Post reported the Italian government had even granted the boy Italian citizenship and put together a transportation plan to get him there.
Baby Alfie was removed from life support Monday and is said to be in a "semi-vegetative state" as a result of a degenerative neurological condition.
The royal baby -- born on Monday at 8 pounds, 7 ounces -- has been named Louis Arthur Charles and is fifth in line to the throne after his grandfather Prince Charles, his father and older siblings.
Huckabee sent his congratulations out to the royal couple, but added that "all life is sacred" and "all babies are a precious gift and nobody’s life is worth more than anyone else’s."
"If that is true, then any effort that might save little Alfie should be allowed to be tried, just as it would be if he were a Royal baby," Huckabee said.
