Apple has updated the universal search function on the fourth-generation Apple TV with support for the Viacom networks Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Spike, while separately expanding the number of services compatible with its "TV" app for both tvOS and iOS devices!

Apple TV's universal search feature allows users to search for content by title, genre, actor, and more across multiple apps and services using text input or voice search using the Siri Remote. Through universal search results, an Apple TV can identify all of the installed apps, such as the Nick App and Nick Jr. App, hosting a particular show or movie, making it easier to pick between them.

To help unify the TV watching experience, the app allows users to see all the shows and movies they are watching, find upcoming episodes, and get personalized recommendations on what to watch next. You can also view all of your iTunes videos, and start watching a show or movie directly through the app.

The newly-added services are only supported in the United States.

The same goes for the latest "TV" additions, which include Sony's ad-supported Crackle, the classic and arthouse-focused FilmStruck, and finally Freeform, a Disney/ABC channel previously known as ABC Family. The apps are supported on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

At launch, universal search only supported a few channels, but Apple has been rapidly expanding the feature to encompass additional channels. So far, 51 different services are compatible, such as Apple Music, Hulu, HBO Now, and the Cartoon Network.

The cross-platform TV app is available on the Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad.

When and where compatible, the TV app offers a centralized interface for movies and TV shows, linking together different services. It can also be used to find new material to watch, or new apps to try.

Apple Music subscribers can also use the feature to search for songs and albums. Users can also search movies and TV shows in iTunes.

Apple TV universal search is available for 56 services in the United States, but the feature is limited to iTunes, Netflix, and a few other services in Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Elsewhere, only movies in iTunes are supported.

Launched in October 2016, Apple’s TV app is available on the Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad and works in tandem with the single sign-on feature.

You can find a full list of all the content providers that work with Universal Search in different regions around the world on Apple.com.
