BRUJA BORN is the second book in the Brooklyn Brujas series and, we're thrilled to have Zoraida Córdova here to tell us more about it.

Zoraida, what did this book teach you about writing or about yourself?

This book taught me that it was okay to take breaks and let the story go for a period of time before coming back to it. Writing can be lonely, and paired with constant deadlines, it's easy to lose yourself and lose your story along the way. Bruja Born taught me to be kind to myself through the character of Lula. She has a lot of weight on her shoulder and she has to be reminded to take care of herself.

How long or hard was your road to publication? How many books did you write before this one, and how many never got published?

I sent my first query letter when I was 17 so I'm going on 13 years! My career officially started in 2012 with The Vicious Deep. Before that, I have 2 novels that never got published. Don't worry they're terrible and in a secret compartment in my writing cave. Bruja Born is my seventh published novel.

What's your writing ritual like? Do you listen to music? Work at home or at a coffee shop or the library, etc?

Whether I'm home or visiting a new place, I like to find a comfortable quiet nook. April and May of this year brought me to Ecuador, Spain, and France. It was interesting that even though I was in wildly different locations, my writing process remained the same. I found a place-- a coffee shop, a spot in my hotel room or hostel, had my coffee close by, my travel porg named Leia Porgana is always with me (see photo), and then I just start writing. I like being surrounded by chaos because it helps me focus.

Three sisters. One spell. Countless dead.

Lula Mortiz feels like an outsider. Her sister's newfound Encantrix powers have wounded her in ways that Lula's bruja healing powers can't fix, and she longs for the comfort her family once brought her. Thank the Deos for Maks, her sweet, steady boyfriend who sees the beauty within her and brings light to her life.

Then a bus crash turns Lula's world upside down. Her classmates are all dead, including Maks. But Lula was born to heal, to fix. She can bring Maks back, even if it means seeking help from her sisters and defying Death herself. But magic that defies the laws of the deos is dangerous. Unpredictable. And when the dust settles, Maks isn't the only one who's been brought back...
