John Trumbull's "Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776"

Trumbull's Declaration of Independence

Artist: John Trumbull

The painting includes portraits of 42 of the 56 signers and 5 other patriots. The artist sketched the individuals and the room from life.

Look closely to see that Thomas Jefferson appears to be standing on John Adams's foot! While this is probably due to the painting being retouched, the thought is fun.

Switzerland Rejects Citizenship Bids of Residents Who Have Been on Welfare
by CHRIS TOMLINSON

FABRICE COFFRINI/AP/Ges

A new civil rights act has come into force in Switzerland that prevents residents who have been on welfare in the past three years from becoming citizens unless they pay back the money they received to the state.

The new regulations will make it impossible for asylum seekers and migrants who have lived off state handouts in the last three years to become citizens even if they have lived in Switzerland as permanent residents for the required time to make a citizenship application, Kronen Zeitung reports.
The previous law allowed migrants to apply for citizenship as long as they were not on state benefits at the time of their application.
Along with the welfare stipulation, the new act requires migrants to demonstrate a greater level of integration than before including making them prove they have a certain number of Swiss friends and acquaintances.
Language requirements vary by canton with most expecting an intermediate level of language proficiency judged on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at the B1 or B2 level.
While Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, asylum seekers have attempted to flood into the country through the southern Italian border. While many have used Switzerland as a transit country to reach Germany, others have remained in the Alpine state.
Various cantons and cities in Switzerland have attempted to push back against the tide of migrants by making it less appealing for them to come to the country. Late last year, the city of Zurich voted to dramatically cut benefits to failed asylum seekers who were in so-called “F-status” in which they cannot be deported.

Many of the migrants entering Switzerland have also come without any form of identification, making it even more difficult to process their asylum claim or deport those not approved for asylum status.
Swiss national councillor Simonetta Sommaruga revealed late last year that the government is unaware of the true identity of nine out of 10 asylum seekers in the country.

Christian Science Monitor: Right to Self-Defense Added to 2nd Amendment ‘Only Recently’

by AWR HAWKINS

KAREN BLEIER/AFP/Getty Images

In a long and circuitous piece intended to explain that national reciprocity violates states’ rights, the Christian Science Monitor claimed the right to self-defense was added to the Second Amendment “only recently.”

Their exact claim: “[National reciprocity legislation] has pitted a sense of overriding states’ individual wishes and local character against shifting legal views of the Second Amendment, which the Supreme Court has expanded only recently to include self-defense.”
This appears to be a not-so-veiled reference to District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) and McDonald v. Chicago (2010), although neither case created or added a right to the Second Amendment. Rather, the ruling in Heller reaffirmed the individual nature of the rights that had always been protected by the Second Amendment and the ruling in McDonald held that the rights protected by the Second Amendment are incorporated via the Fourteenth Amendment. In other words, they are doubly protected.
To be clear, Justice Samuel Alito wrote the McDonald majority opinion and did use a small portion to explain that self-defense is “the central component” of the Second Amendment, but he did not do this because SCOTUS made it central. Rather, he did it as a way of showing self-defense has always been a crucial right protected by the Second Amendment. It was the centrality of self-defense that supported the ruling of incorporation, not the other way around.
Nevertheless, the Christian Science Monitor says the right to defend oneself was added to the Second Amendment “only recently.”
They also suggested Americans may not even possess a right to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense. They said, “The Supreme Court has never ruled on whether there is a right for law-abiding Americans to carry a concealed weapon.” This would be strange thinking to our Founding Fathers, who risked their lives, their fortunes, their sacred honor, to secure the exercise of God-given rights that predate the United States, and certainly the Supreme Court.
The Founders hedged in the right not simply to keep arms but to bear them as well, as the Second Amendment plainly states. And the Founders also used the words “shall not be infringed” to ensure a widespread understanding that keeping and bearing arms was not something placed under the purview of government. Rather, it was (and is) a natural right possessed and exercised by free men.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn on Trump’s Broadband Order: ‘You Cannot Have a First-World Economy with a Third-World Internet’
by SEAN MORAN

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) praised President Donald Trump’s executive order expanding rural broadband in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, saying, “You cannot have a first-world economy with a third-world Internet.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order expanding broadband to rural America on Monday.
“Those towers are going to go up, and you are going to have great, great, broadband,” Trump said on Monday during a speech for the American Farm Bureau Federation.
Congresswoman Blackburn told Breitbart News that rural Americans everywhere need high-speed internet to have their communities prosper.
Blackburn said, “We are so pleased to see the president go ahead and sign the executive order, this is one of the things that I have worked with so many Tennessee county officials, mayors, and community members. They have talked about the barriers to entry in the high-speed Internet. One of those has been the difficulty and the cost of going through the myriad of permitting process as well as the cost of towers and. For the president to say let’s get busy and remove these barriers is a good step forward.”
Rep. Blackburn continued, explaining that she will introduce legislation to facilitate broadband expansion in rural America.
“Now, it is up to us to move forward on the legislative part of that agenda. We are working on these bills, we have four resolutions that we will introduce, we will focus on innovation and cutting red tape, as well as promoting public safety,” the Tennessee congresswoman argued.
Blackburn, who serves as he House Communications and Technology Subcommittee chairman, explained that Internet service providers (ISPs) have to jump through onerous federal, state, and local permitting hurdles to bring broadband to rural America. Rep. Blackburn contends that Trump’s new executive order, as well her committee’s subsequent legislation, will make this process easier and more efficient.
Rep. Blackburn told Breitbart News, “The president’s executive order will simplify the permitting process. Right now, communities will say there’s too many state, local, and federal permitting and they have too many different hoops to jump through. This makes it very difficult to supply voice, data, and Internet services to their communities. They are thinking, ‘make this simpler’ and more cost-effective so that at the end of the day it is a more efficient process.”
Congresswoman Blackburn continued, “On the innovation side, we want to make sure that we do not choose winners and losers. The legislation that we bring forward will be technology neutral so that individuals can bring Internet through wireline, or fiber, or wireless, or fixed-wireless, or satellite, they will be able to do that. This will bring more opportunities for them to meet their needs in the most cost-effective way.”
Rep. Blackburn explained to Breitbart News some of the unique challenges that rural America faces without high-speed Internet. Federal Communications Chairman (FCC) Ajit Pai calls this disparity between rural and urban America the “digital divide,” which he also promised to end.
Chairman Pai praised the order in a tweet, saying, “Two important @WhiteHouse executive orders issued today by @POTUS seek to promote high-speed Internet access in rural America. Addressing this critical issue will go a long way toward closing the #digitaldivide.”

Blackburn contended, “The economy is one of the things … we cannot have the jobs, we cannot grow our economic base, we cannot grow our manufacturing base, we cannot grow out logistics center, we cannot have call centers if we do not have high-speed Internet. Second is the need for public safety. Our law enforcement officers, we want our officers to have next generation 911, to be able to utilize the concepts that we get with increased wireless access. It becomes a public safety issue in areas with no cellular service at all.”
The Tennessee congresswoman told Breitbart News, “We are struggling to keep our rural hospitals open. Instead, we need to use telemedicine and remote monitoring concepts. In order to do that, we need high-speed Internet. They can use these platforms to help triage somebody and to give them the most effective care, and perhaps transport them to a facility. It’s a time saver and therefore a life-saver. The fourth thing is for education. In my district, I have some parents that tell they have to get in a van after supper at night and drive [their kids] back into town at night to a hospital parking lot or a McDonald’s parking or a library parking lot where they can get a wireless signal so that they can work. They would like that in their community and their home so that their kids can do homework. Likewise, adults that are doing workforce redevelopment and job development often say that they cannot stream these videos without high-speed Internet.”
Rep. Blackburn concluded, “The district I represent is a rural county. It has 19 counties in it and they say, ‘Marsha we want that first best, economy, and we cannot do it without a third-world economy internet.’ You cannot have a first-world economy with a third world internet.”

Look: Hilarious Sign Outside Hardware Store Reveals Who’s Really Behind Russia Collusion
A Vermont hardware store believes it has found the source of Russian collusion “fake news” narrative”: two world-famous cartoon characters.
The Woodstock Home and Hardware, which regularly posts humorous messages in front the store, recently relied on the stars of the old “The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle Show” to bring some levity to the story, which has dominated the news for over a year.
The sign reads, “Boris & Natasha say Russia collusion fake news — Work of Moose and Squirrel.”

Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale were Bullwinkle the moose and Rocky the squirrel’s arch enemies, always seeking to thwart the heroes’ best-laid plans.
The no-goodniks were from the fictional Pottsylvania, a satellite nation of the former Soviet Union, i.e. on the bad side of the Iron Curtain.

Evidently, this is the sign at Woodstock Home and Hardware in Vermont.
The Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons originally aired in the late 1950s ending in the mid-1960s and continued in reruns for many years thereafter.
The characters hit the big screen in 2000 in “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle.”
In the movie, Rocky and Bullwinkle team up with the FBI to thwart a conspiracy involving Boris and Natasha to brainwash the American public through cable television to vote for their evil boss, Fearless Leader for president.
Though the FBI agents were the good guys in the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie, Trump has good reason to believe at least some of the bureau’s agents are not so in his story.

Text messages released last month showed FBI agent Peter Strzok, who was a member of Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, and his alleged mistress Lisa Page had a strong anti-Trump bias.
Strzok described Trump during the 2016 campaign as a “loathsome human” and an “idiot,” and found the prospect of him being president “terrifying.”
Page, texted him, “There is no way he gets elected,” to which he replied, “I want to believe the path you threw out for consideration in Andy’s office … that there’s no way he gets elected — but I’m afraid we can’t take that risk. It’s like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you’re 40.”
Andy was apparently a reference to then-Deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe, who served under Comey. Following the release of the text messages, McCabe, 49, reportedly indicated he will be retiring early this year.
Trump reiterated to reporters during a news conference on Saturday at Camp David that his campaign did not collude with Russia.
“I guess the collusion now is dead, because everyone found after a year of study, everyone’s found there is absolutely no collusion,” he said. “There has been no collusion between us and the Russians.”
Fox News @FoxNews
.@POTUS: "There's been no collusion between us and the Russians. Now there has been collusion between @HillaryClinton, the @DNC, and the Russians."

9:30 AM - Jan 7, 2018
“Now there has been collusion between Hillary Clinton, the DNC and the Russians,” Trump added. “Unfortunately, you people (the press) don’t cover that very much.”
The president was referring to the infamous anti-Trump “dossier,” which the DNC and the Clinton campaign funded through the opposition research firm Fusion GPS.
Congressional investigators are seeking to determine if the FBI used the partisan document, filled with unverified salacious allegations, as justification to launch its inquiry into the Trump campaign.

Report: McCain Was Used as Fusion GPS Secret Operative

In a stunning op-ed published by the mainstream media last week, Fusion GPS founders Glenn R. Simpson and Peter Fritch admitted that they helped the researcher who compiled their since-discredited dossier on President Donald Trump share the phony document with Arizona Sen. John McCain.
“After the election, Mr. Steele decided to share his intelligence with Senator John McCain via an emissary,” they wrote for The New York Times, referencing Christopher Steele, the former MI6 spy responsible for assembling the fraudulent dossier. “We helped him do that.”
“The goal was to alert the United States national security community to an attack on our country by a hostile foreign power,” they added.
We now know that the sham dossier contains a litany of totally contrived fabrications about the president, including the ludicrous claim he once paid prostitutes to urinate on a bed once slept on by former President Barack Obama.
It further includes uncorroborated and likely false allegations that Trump’s presidential campaign effectively colluded with members of the Russian government to affect the outcome of the 2016 election.
Dovetailing back to McCain, in a separate report filed days after the publication of Simpson and Fritch’s column, The New York Times revealed that “McCain is believed to have then (after receiving the dossier) met with James B. Comey, then the F.B.I. director, to discuss the dossier.”
Comey’s FBI then reportedly used the dossier “as part of the justification to win approval to secretly monitor a Trump associate, according to US officials briefed on the investigation,” as cited in a CNN report from earlier this year.
Now follow the bouncing ball: #1. Fusion GPS compiled a fake dossier. #2. Researcher Christopher Steele shared the dossier with John McCain. #3. McCain shared the dossier with James Comey. #4. Comey’s FBI launched investigations against Trump’s campaign.
This new revelation — from the founders of Fusion GPS, to boot — places McCain in a very precarious light.
What on earth tempted him to share this phony dossier with the FBI? Did he simply not realize that the contents of the dossier were fake? Or was he so motivated by anti-Trump hatred that he just didn’t care?
Breitbart reportedly sent a copy of questions such as these to McCain’s office this week but received no reply:
“Given that Fusion GPS is openly an opposition research firm, did Sen. McCain know that he was sharing political opposition research on Trump with the intel community? Did he know the dossier was partially funded by the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s campaign?”
The latter question concerns a revelation unveiled months ago that failed Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and the Democrat National Committee teamed up to pay for some of the research in the dossier.
It’s clear either way that McCain played right into the hands of the Democrats. Moreover, the plan to discredit the president and potentially reverse his election win continues to this day, with investigators in the FBI and Congress continuing to search desperately for likely nonexistent proof he colluded with the Russians.
There’s just one problem with that: Anyone with even a semblance of common sense now knows Trump never colluded with anyone.
In fact, the real colluders appear to have been entirely on the left, save of course for McCain, who it now looks like either wittingly or unwittingly colluded with the Democrats and almost got away with it. Nice try, though.

Newt Gingrich: Claims that Trump has mental problems disproven by his enormous success
By Newt Gingrich   Fox News

Imagine you had a friend who – as a relatively young man – decided to take a shot at the toughest real estate market in America and ended up making billions of dollars buying, selling and building properties.

Imagine this person then mastered branding to the point that people paid to license his name on hotels, resorts and other buildings across the world.

Imagine that over the next few decades this friend also:
  • Bought and developed 19 golf courses.
  • Was on the cover of Time Magazine in 1989 and named the magazine’s Person of the Year in 2016.
  • Produced and starred in a reality TV show for 11 years that attracted more than 20 million viewers in its first season.
  • Wrote multiple bestselling books on business.
Then suppose this friend, having never previously held public office, decided to run for president, where he led the Republican field in polls every week but one. He beat 16 other Republicans to win the nomination. And he took on and defeated the entire elite media, which could not stand him, and published and talked about every negative “fact” they could conjure.
Then imagine he defeated the obvious Democratic heir apparent who had been involved in politics for over 50 years and had served as first lady of Arkansas, first lady of the United States, U.S. senator from New York, candidate for president in 2008, and secretary of state prior to becoming the 2016 Democratic nominee for president.
In his first year as president, imagine this friend nominated a conservative to the Supreme Court and got him approved, aggressively cut regulations, established a National Security Strategy that has been widely praised, and successfully helped pass the largest tax cut in more than three decades for the American people.

Imagine as a result of all this, small business confidence, CEO confidence, and consumer confidence are through the roof, which has helped drive the stock market to a record high.
Now, consider how you would react if someone tried to convince you to ignore this track record and suggest that your incredibly successful friend had questionable mental capabilities.
Wouldn’t you instead be inclined to be curious about how your friend does so many different things competently – and be puzzled that anyone could reasonably suggest he was anything other than capable?
There is no need to imagine, of course, because the left and the news media have spent the past week making this scenario a reality. They’ve made erroneous, malicious claims that President Trump is somehow mentally unfit to lead our country – despite all evidence that he’s doing a fantastic job.
The media and political elite still haven’t gotten over the fact that Donald J. Trump won and that he has been able to defy them and prove them wrong about virtually everything in American politics since he announced his candidacy for president.
Remember this the next time you hear someone disparage a person he or she could never compete with in business, politics or even on the golf course.

Nearly 40 Percent of Sex Offenders in Oregon Prisons Are Illegal Aliens

The murder of Kate Steinle in California highlighted the fact that we have a serious criminal illegal alien problem in this country. Many of these individuals, after breaking the law to enter the country, go on to commit other crimes — theft, rape, and even murder. David Olen Cross released a December 2017 report based on Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) data, announcing that there are "973 foreign nationals (criminal aliens) incarcerated in the state’s prison system."
Oregon has 14,739 inmates incarcerated in its 14 prisons scattered across the state. "Approximately one in every fifteen prisoners incarcerated by the state was a criminal alien, 6.60 percent of the total prison population," the report said.
According to Cross, all of the 973 illegal aliens currently in the state's prisons were identified by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Anytime that happens, DOC officials will place an "ICE detainer" on the inmate. "After the inmate completes his/her state sanction, prison officials will transfer custody of the inmate to ICE," he said.
Marion County, home to Salem, the state capital, houses the most illegal alien inmates with 235 — nearly one-fourth of the prison population. Washington County (Hillsboro) and Multnomah County (Portland, a sanctuary city) each have around 200 illegals — around 20 percent of the prison population in those counties.
An astounding 476 — 48.92 percent — of the criminal alien prisoners in Oregon have been convicted of committing crimes of a sexual nature, with 200 cases of sex abuse, 175 cases of rape, and 101 cases of sodomy. In fact, detainees with ICE detainers make up 39.32 percent of the state's incarcerated sex offenders. A total of 136 of the state's criminal alien inmates are in custody because they murdered someone. Drugs, assault, robbery, kidnapping, burglary, theft and driving offenses round out the top ten list of crimes committed.
The criminal aliens in Oregon prisons come predominantly from South and Central America as well as Cuba. Nearly 80 percent, 777, came from Mexico. The next highest country of origin is Guatemala with 19 inmates.
The cost is steep to house and care for these prisoners. The criminal aliens each cost Oregon taxpayers $94.55 per day. That adds up to $91,977 per day for all of the criminal aliens in the state — $643,980 per week, more than $33 million per year.
Those numbers do not include the costs incurred for legal services, interpreters, court costs, or victim assistance, nor do they include the devastating personal costs that victims of their crimes pay.
According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR),  there are approximately 55,000 criminal aliens in U.S. prisons, accounting for one-fourth of prisoners in Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities. "There are about 297,000 criminal aliens incarcerated in state and local prisons. That number represents about 16.4 percent of the state and local prison population compared to the 12.9 percent of the total population comprised of foreign-born residents," according to FAIR. The estimated cost of housing these criminals at the federal level is estimated to be $1.5 to $1.6 billion per year.

Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner withdraw their divorce

By Julia Mars

   Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner
She just can’t pull out.
Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin and her jailed sext-a-holic hubby Anthony Weiner have ended their pending divorce case.

Identical statements from their lawyers Wednesday cited the scandal-plagued couple’s desire to protect their 6-year-old son by settling outside court — but experts say the real reason could be to shield one another from a potential federal probe.

Abedin, 41 — spotted over the weekend sunning herself at the luxury Four Seasons Hotel on Hawaii’s Big Island — was scheduled to appear in Manhattan Supreme Court for a compliance conference in her contested divorce case against Weiner, 53.

Instead, one of her attorneys submitted paperwork signed by both parties agreeing to end the case, a court source told The Post.

The judge announced from the bench that the case was “discontinued.”

“In order to reduce any impact of these proceedings on their child, the parties have decided to reach a settlement swiftly and privately,” Abedin’s lawyer, Charles Miller, and Weiner’s attorney, Margaret Donohoe, said in separate statements.

But family law expert Michael Stutman said they’d still have to file a divorce settlement in court for it to be legally binding.

Stutman, a prominent Manhattan divorce lawyer who’s not involved in the case, speculated that Weiner and Abedin might want to stay married to invoke spousal immunity.

President Trump last week urged the Justice Department to investigate Abedin for keeping classified emails on Weiner’s laptop.

“Crooked Hillary Clinton’s top aid [sic], Huma Abedin, has been accused of disregarding basic security protocols. She put Classified Passwords into the hands of foreign agents,” the president tweeted. “Remember sailors [sic] pictures on submarine? Jail! Deep State Justice Dept must finally act?”

New York law states that a husband or wife can’t be “required to disclose a confidential communication made by one or the other during the marriage.”

Two more leading divorce lawyers agreed that spousal immunity may have been the reason for withdrawing the case.

“He easily could be called in by a grand jury to testify against her so by dropping the lawsuit he can exercise the marital privilege,” matrimonial lawyer Suzanne Bracker told The Post.

“When you’re married to someone you cannot be compelled to testify against them.”

A third attorney, Bonnie Rabin, said the “spousal privilege issue is out there considering the investigations.”

But it’s hardly the first time Abedin has stunned onlookers by opting to stand by her philandering man, who is currently serving nearly two years of hard time in a Massachusetts federal lockup for sexting with an underage girl.

She stuck with the much mocked former lawmaker when he resigned from Congress in 2011 — tearfully admitting to his sexting addiction after mistakenly tweeting out a photo of his crotch.

And she was still by his side when he ran for mayor in 2013 — only for his campaign to go flaccid when he was caught sexting with multiple women under the pseudonym “Carlos Danger.”

Abedin finally separated from her husband in August 2016 after The Post published yet another crotch shot — this time with the couple’s toddler son in the picture.

But she didn’t move for divorce until Weiner was caught sending sordid photos and messages to the 15-year-old in 2016 — filing papers just hours after he pleaded guilty in May.

G’ day…Ciao…
