Manchin Is Said to Emerge as Possible Pick for Energy Department

Image: Manchin Is Said to Emerge as Possible Pick for Energy Department

Some White House and Republican officials are exploring the idea of putting West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin in charge of the Energy Department, according to four people familiar with the discussions, a move that could boost President Donald Trump’s stalled legislative agenda.

If Manchin were offered and accepted the position, that would allow West Virginia’s Governor Jim Justice -- a newly minted Republican -- to appoint a GOP successor and bring the party a vote closer in the Senate to being able to repeal Obamacare. The idea is in the early stages of consideration, and it’s unclear whether it has support within the administration, according to the people, who described the conversations under condition of anonymity.

A spokesman for Manchin declined to say whether the senator would take the Energy secretary job -- currently held by former Texas Governor Rick Perry -- if offered.

“Senator Manchin has not had any recent conversations with the Administration about the Secretary of Energy position. He remains committed to serving the people of West Virginia,” said Jonathan Kott.

Manchin, who faces a tough reelection battle in 2018, was considered for the post after Trump won election in November. His nomination fell through in part because Trump wouldn’t assure him he could pick his own staff, according to two people familiar with the staff selections, who described them on condition of anonymity.

Cabinet Moves

Perry was named Energy Secretary instead, and it’s unclear whether he would be open to taking another position in the administration. He has been among the candidates considered to replace John Kelly at the Department of Homeland Security, according to three people familiar with the deliberations. Kelly, who became White House chief of staff last week, and Trump haven’t yet decided who should succeed him as Homeland Security secretary.

Perry has not been a seamless fit with the Energy Department, where the two most recent secretaries had Ph.D.s in physics. Perry was an animal science major at Texas A&M, and he advocated abolishing the department during his own presidential bid. The Air Force veteran was initially under consideration to lead the Pentagon under Trump.

With an annual budget of about $30 billion, the Energy Department’s work ranges from safeguarding nuclear weapons to the research into carbon-capture technology and maintaining the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Perry has expressed a deep interest in the nuclear security and intelligence aspects of the post, and has become a vocal advocate for the national laboratories and for U.S. energy exports.

The ultimate goal of such a Cabinet shift would be to jump-start Trump’s agenda in Congress, particularly repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

Yet to execute the idea and pass an Obamacare repeal, Republicans and the administration would have to pull off a highly choreographed series of events. Perry would have to agree to take another job, the Senate would have to confirm Manchin as Energy Secretary, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would then have to bring a repeal bill back up without losing any of the 49 Republican senators who voted for the so-called skinny repeal.

Some of those senators, however, like Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, said they were only voting for the bill to bring it to negotiations with the House. Other Republicans, like Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, are working on a bipartisan fix.

Moreover, Manchin would face intense pressure from fellow Democrats not to leave the Senate and bear some personal responsibility for a repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

Manchin has said in interviews that he warned Trump personally that people in his state who gained insurance under the law don’t know who gave it to them, but would surely know who took it away.

Earlier this month, Trump appeared at a political rally in Huntington, West Virginia, where Justice announced that he was changing parties from Democrat to Republican.

Manchin has sought to position himself as a political independent. In a recent interview with the Charleston Gazette-Mail that he won’t commit to Democratic policy positions just to win re-election.

“The bottom line is, if it doesn’t help West Virginia, it doesn’t make sense to me,” Manchin told the newspaper. “Just because there’s an election doesn’t mean I sign on or don’t sign on,”

Comey Is #1 Rogue Spook

Comey started a war on Trump!

It was Comey who brought the phony dossier out into the public and created the Russian illusion/collusion scandal:

•  COMEY insisted on including a two-page summary of the unverified, fabricated and highly inflammatory anti-Trump dossier in a report to the President and leaders of Congress

•  COMEY has testified that he knew that providing confidential information to Congress virtually assured that  it would appear in the press. He said he had learned how that works in Washington

•  Comey was right. BUZZFEED immediately published the entire dossier and millions read the phony claims

•  The FBI knew there were problems with the dossier. In October, 2016,right before the election, the bureau offered $50,000 to Christopher Steele who compiled the dossier. The FBI wanted him to verify the claims in his dossier.

•  Steele never verified the dossier and Comey was informed by James Clapper, head of the National Intelligence Agency that the charges in the dossier could not be verified and that there were problems with some of the "sources."

•  Despite these warnings about the reliability of the dossier, Comey never alerted the public to the phony material in the dossier

•  The fake information in the dossier was easily proven to be false

•  The FBI refused to admit or deny that it paid any money to Steele.

•  Steele has worked with the FBI in the past

•  Steele later told a London Court that much of the material in the dossier was provided to him by "unsolicited sources" and needed to be verified.

After Trump fired Comey, he signed a multi-million dollar book deal.

Maybe he was saving the truth about the dossier for his memoirs.

Directing the FBI turned out to be lucrative.

College student gets 100 days in slammer for registering dead voters for Dems
Fox News

A Virginia college student was sentenced this week to 100 days incarceration for submitting fraudulent voter registration forms listing the names of dead people and other faulty information for a political organization connected to the Democratic Party.

Andrew J. Spieles, 21, was sentenced in federal court Tuesday for knowingly transferring false Virginia voter registration forms during the 2016 election, according to the Justice Department.

Spieles, a student at James Madison University, worked as a staffer for Harrisonburg Votes -- a group affiliated with the Democratic Party -- and was paid to register voters in the area during the weeks leading up to the 2016 election. Spieles’ job was to register as many voters as possible; he reported to Democratic campaign headquarters in Harrisonburg, Va., according to the DOJ.

After filling out a registration form, Spieles entered the voter information into a computer system used by the Virginia Democratic Party. Each week, someone would hand-deliver paper copies to the Registrar’s Office in Harrisonburg.

Last August, however, an employee from the Registrar’s Office contacted law enforcement after another worker recognized a registration form submitted in the name of the late father of a Virginia judge. The office then discovered multiple instances of falsified forms. Some were in the names of deceased individuals, and others had incorrect middle names, birth dates and Social Security numbers, according to the Justice Department.

Spieles admitted he prepared all 18 of the false voter registration forms by obtaining information from “walk sheets” given to him by the Virginia Democratic Party. Spieles said no one else participated in the crime.

Spieles' fraud was punishable by up to a year in prison and a $100,00 fine, but he reached a plea agreement with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeb Terrien that limited his sentence to between 100 and 120 days behind bars, according to a EAGNews.org.

President Trump Cuts Planned Parenthood-Run Sex-Ed Programs, May Prepare for Abstinence Funding
MICAIAH BILGER

President Donald Trump recently cut funding to a questionable teen pregnancy prevention program that has given millions of dollars to the abortion business Planned Parenthood.

The Hill reports pro-abortion President Barack Obama created the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program in 2010 to teach vulnerable populations of students about preventing pregnancy.

Participants in the program recently learned that their grant funding will end next year, two years sooner than expected, according to the report. Trump’s administration notified the 81 grant recipients that funding for the program is being cut by about $200 million and their grants will end on June 30, 2018, the report states.

Among the groups receiving grants to teach sex education are several Planned Parenthood affiliates.

The program administrators awarded an annual $1 million grant to Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and Hawaiian Islands to target rural teens.

The abortion group said it uses the funds to “reduce teen pregnancy rates, increase use of contraceptives and delay initiation of sexual activity among ninth- to 12th-grade youth in rural Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Hawaii.”

Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho, as well as Planned Parenthood of the Heartland also received grants of nearly $1 million each annually to promote their sex agenda to teens.

Health and Human Services Department spokesman Mark Vafiades told the New York Times that there is very little evidence that the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program is working.

Vafiades said the evidence of a positive impact is “very weak,” and the Trump administration wants to support a program that “provides youth with the information and skills they need to avoid the many risks associated with teen sex.”

Democrats and abortion activists are upset by the cuts, and are sending letters to HHS Secretary Tom Price in protest. Many speculate that the cuts could mean Trump’s administration will support abstinence-based programs instead.

Here’s more from The Hill:

Valerie Huber, a prominent national abstinence education advocate, was recently named chief of staff to the assistant secretary for health, which oversees the office that manages the Teen Pregnancy Prevention program.

It’s not clear how much of a role Huber played in the decision to cut funding. But she has questioned its effectiveness in the past.

“The healthiest message for youth is one that gives youth the skills and information to avoid the risks of teen sex, not merely reduce them,” Huber wrote in an op-ed for The Hill.

“Policymakers finally have an opportunity to give American youth the reinforcement they need to continue to make healthy choices — and to normalize sexual delay for all teens and especially for those teens who currently feel pressured to have sex by social media, their favorite music — or their sex education classes.”

Many parents and communities become very upset when they learn Planned Parenthood teaches their teenagers about sex in public school. A Michigan school district recently rejected a Planned Parenthood sex education program after witnessing a strong public outcry against it.

SIGN THE PETITION! Congress Must De-Fund Planned Parenthood Immediately

Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the United States, aborting more than 300,000 unborn babies every year. The abortion chain also teaches sex education in public schools across the country, and promotes risky sexual behavior to vulnerable young teens at its clinics.

In 2014, Live Action release an undercover video series showing Planned Parenthood employees encouraging young teens to participate in sado-masochistic sexual activities, including gagging, whipping, asphyxiation, shopping at sex stores and viewing pornography.

LifeNews also reported Planned Parenthood’s booklet for HIV-positive youth, “Healthy, Happy and Hot,” tells young people that it is their “human right” to not tell their partner that they have HIV.

The abortion giant also publishes multiple “resources” for children and teenagers concerning sexual activity. These materials claim to provide “age appropriate” sex education to children starting at age 4.

Planned Parenthood justifies starting sex-education at such a young age by stating, “Ideally, medically accurate sexuality education would be taught each year in our schools from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.”

What is an American City Worth?

What is an American City Worth?
What is an American city worth?
On September 11, 2001, we were deeply moved by the deaths of 2,996 people and the wounding of another 6,000.
In reaction to that shocking day, we launched a series of wars which have gone on for nearly 16 years, have cost more than $5 trillion, and have left more than 4,000 Americans dead and more than 50,000 severely wounded.
Order Understanding Trump
That has been the cost of an attack by 19 terrorists using commercial airliners as weapons.
Now consider the human cost of losing one American city to a nuclear strike.
I chose only one city to make a point about our current lack of seriousness in dealing with the spread of nuclear weapons to more and more unstable and dangerous countries.
The Los Angeles Times reported on, August 16, 2006, that a nuclear attack on the Port of Long Beach would "have catastrophic consequences for the United States,” resulting in the instant deaths of 60,000 people and irradiation of another 150,000. Additionally, the paper reported the economic loss would be ten times that of the September 11th terrorist attack in New York City. The paper cited a report by the RAND Corporation’s Center for Terrorism Risk Management Policy, which the article’s author wrote presented “a terrifying picture not only of the possibility of such an attack but of its immediate and long-term effects on Southern California, the nation, and the global economy."
The Long Beach estimate was for a 10-kiloton device – that’s half the size of the “Fat Man” bomb dropped on Nagasaki and two-thirds the size of “Little Boy,” which was dropped on Hiroshima.
The devastating impact of one nuclear device – even a "small" weapon – is so enormous that it must be taken incredibly seriously. The destruction that could be wrought by larger, modern devices is nearly unfathomable.
The burn casualties alone from one attack could be overwhelming. A 2007 study by the Center for Mass Destruction Defense at the University of Georgia noted there were about 1,500 beds for severe burn victims in the entire country and more than 80 percent are occupied at any one time. If a 550-kiloton bomb were to drop in Atlanta, it would produce an estimated 300,000 burn victims and collapse the entire health system, according to the study.
The website NUKEMAP allows you to visualize potential impacts of nuclear strikes and estimate casualty rates for a wide variety of cities. The images of what could happen are sobering.
I first became horrified by the impact of a nuclear weapon attack after reading Philip Wylie’s novel, Tomorrow, as a teenager living at Fort Riley in Kansas. Wylie outlined an attack that hit two neighboring cities (similar to Minneapolis and St. Paul). One city had effective civil defense preparations. The other city had ignored civil defense. The difference in casualties and in human tragedies was enormous.
The impact of this novel was translated into serious nonfiction in 1962, when Herman Kahn wrote Thinking about the Unthinkable. This was a vivid examination of the facts of nuclear weapons and nuclear war. Kahn was dealing with superpower threats in which hundreds and even thousands of hydrogen warheads could be used. It would have been the end of our world.
The danger has since increased.
After three years of study, the Hart-Rudman Commission, which President Clinton and I created in 1998 to evaluate our national security strategy, warned that "America will become increasingly vulnerable to hostile attack on our homeland, and our military superiority will not help us."
Furthermore, the Commission reported that the dangerous combination of weapons proliferation and terrorism would make the U.S. homeland less secure, and that "a direct attack against American citizens on American soil is likely over the next quarter century.”
Among other things, the Commission suggested that we create an independent National Homeland Security Agency to plan, coordinate, and integrate government activities related to homeland security and ensure necessary resources were readily available -- in addition to making homeland protection the National Guard’s primary mission.
This proposal was for a dramatically more robust, nuclear war-oriented agency than the current Department of Homeland Security, which was created in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. As such, we still need to develop a totally new or separately structured civil defense system for responding, recovering, and rebuilding after a nuclear event.
These bold, decisive proposals for both active and passive defenses should be read in the context of the scale of pain a nuclear event would inflict upon America.
In a future newsletter, I will outline a robust response to the North Korean-Iranian nuclear threats.
The age of deterrence as the sole strategy may be over.
The age of deep defense against nuclear weapons may be beginning.
If we thought we could reliably deter North Korea or Iran, we would not be so intense about blocking their nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
However, if we truly believe the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs might be used against us, we have an obligation to rethink our strategy and our investment in defense both civil and military.
Remember how you felt after 9/11, when almost 3,000 people were killed and 6,000 were injured. Now, imagine how you would feel if 60,000 people were vaporized and 150,000 were exposed to hazardous radiation in a Long Beach-size attack.
What is avoiding a disaster on that scale worth?
Your Friend,
Newt

Poll: Sen. Susan Collins Increasingly Unpopular for Vote Against Obamacare Repeal

2
Susan Collins
A new survey indicates that Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) has become increasingly unpopular as a result of her vote against Obamacare repeal in the Senate.

Sen. Collins, along with Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and John McCain (R-AZ), voted against Obamacare repeal in the Senate, effectively halting the repeal effort in the upper chamber. Conservatives have frequently chastised Sen. Susan Collins’ opposition to repealing Obamacare. She opposed Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare in 2015, and she voted against repealing Obamacare this summer. Jason Pye, vice president of legislative affairs for FreedomWorks, asked, “Is Susan Collins actually a Republican? She conferences with the Republicans, there’s an R next to her name, but a question mark is more appropriate.”
Many pundits speculate that Sen. Collins might run for Maine governor after current Governor Paul LePage finishes up his final term in 2018. Collins ran for governor and lost against now-Sen. Angus King (I-ME) in 1994.
The new poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP) revealed some unfavorable polling for the Maine moderate Republican. Sixty-two percent of Maine citizens disapproved of Sen. Collins’ job performance, and 62 percent of those polled also said that they would rather vote for someone else in the Republican primary for Maine governor. Forty-four percent of Maine Republicans polled suggested that they would rather support Mary Mayhew, the former Health and Human Services commissioner for Maine.
Sixty-one percent of Maine citizens suggested that Sen. Collins voting against Obamacare repeal made them less likely to vote for Collins for governor. Only 24 percent said that it would make it more likely to vote for Collins.
Seventy-seven percent of Maine Republicans approved of President Donald Trump’s job performance, while only 19 percent of Republicans disapprove of the president.

“Mad Dog” Mattis Just Shut Down Kim Jong Un

Tensions over North Korea’s nuclear program are at the point where war could break out at any moment.
Kim Jong Un is menacing the world with his rogue nuclear weapons programs.

But “Mad Dog” Mattis just shut him down with one epic statement.
News had broken that North Korea successfully developed the ability to miniaturize nuclear warheads.

Now the only step left for North Korea to complete a weapon that can strike the United States is to be able to attach those warheads to a working ICBM.
Donald Trump reacted to this news by stating that if North Korea escalated threats against the United States they would be met with “fire and fury.”
President Trump: If North Korea makes any more threats to the U.S., "they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen"
North Korea then blustered that they were preparing plans to fire missiles at the U.S. territory of Guam.
CNN reports:
“NORTH KOREA’S MILITARY IS “EXAMINING THE OPERATIONAL PLAN” TO STRIKE AREAS AROUND THE US TERRITORY OF GUAM WITH MEDIUM-TO-LONG-RANGE STRATEGIC BALLISTIC MISSILES, STATE-RUN NEWS AGENCY KCNA SAID EARLY WEDNESDAY LOCAL TIME.
SPECIFICALLY, THE STATEMENT MENTIONED A POTENTIAL STRIKE ON ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE DESIGNED “TO SEND A SERIOUS WARNING SIGNAL TO THE US.”
THE BASE IS ONE OF TWO ON THE PACIFIC ISLAND, WHICH ARE THE CLOSEST BASES ON US SOIL TO NORTH KOREA, AND REPRESENT THE WESTERNMOST TIP OF THE COUNTRY’S MILITARY MIGHT.”
Pundits were worried the crisis was spiraling out of control.
But then “Mad Dog” Mattis weighed in with a statement that put an end to any notion that North Korea could threaten the United States.
DefSec Mattis: North Korea "should cease any consideration of actions that will lead to the end of the regime and destruction of its people"
DefSec Mattis: North Korea "should cease any consideration of actions that will lead to the end of the regime and destruction of its people"
Continued: "The regime’s actions will continue to be grossly overmatched by ours and would lose any arms race or conflict it initiates.”
Mattis echoed Trump’s sentiments that North Korea would be foolish to initiate a conflict with the United States and that the only outcome would be total destruction of the rogue nation.

Obama Hid This Frightening Truth About North Korea

Barack Obama’s administration was famous for scandals, lies, and cover ups.
Americans are still digging out from under the mountain of corruption he left behind.
But now the nation is learning Obama hid a disturbing fact about North Korea.
When news broke that North Korea had developed miniaturized nuclear warheads and that the communist nation was one step away from being able to obliterate targets within the U.S. mainland, the world was shocked.
The Washington Post broke the story of a Defense Intelligence Agency report that revealed the true nature of the Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons capabilities.
But the Post left out relevant information.
The DIA report was from 2013 – while Obama was still in office – and the Obama administration had tried to bury the findings.
Fox News reports:
“Tuesday’s bombshell Washington Post story that the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has determined North Korea is capable of constructing miniaturized nuclear weapons that could be used as warheads for missiles – possibly ICBMs – left out a crucial fact: DIA actually concluded this in 2013.  The Post also failed to mention that the Obama administration tried to downplay and discredit this report at the time.
During an April 11, 2013, House Armed Services Committee hearing, Congressman Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., inadvertently revealed several unclassified sentences from a DIA report that said DIA had determined with “moderate confidence” that North Korea has the capability to make a nuclear weapon small enough to be launched with a ballistic missile.
The Director of National Intelligence and Obama officials subsequently tried to dismiss Lamborn’s disclosure by claiming the DIA assessment was an outlier that did not reflect the views of the rest of the U.S. Intelligence Community.
It was clear what Obama officials were doing in 2013.  The DIA report represented inconvenient facts that threatened President Obama’s North Korea “strategic patience” policy — a policy to do nothing about North Korea and kick this problem down the road to the next president.  Obama officials tried to downplay the DIA assessment to prevent it from being used to force the president to employ a more assertive North Korea policy.”
Obama’s policy of denying the threat of North Korea failed miserably.
The world now sits on the brink of nuclear war because they refused to confront evil.
But amazingly, former Obama officials are still trying to appease the North Korean dictatorship.
Former National Security Advisor Susan Rice said the U.S. can tolerate a nuclear armed North Korea.
The Washington Examiner reports:
In an op-ed for the New York Times, Rice said it’s too dangerous for Trump to risk military engagement with North Korea with his “bluster,” which could put millions of people in Seoul at risk. While she said the Trump administration should not “legitimize” North Korea as a nuclear state, it should start tolerating the new reality.
“History shows that we can, if we must, tolerate nuclear weapons in North Korea — the same way we tolerated the far greater threat of thousands of Soviet nuclear weapons during the Cold War,” she wrote. “It will require being pragmatic.”
Rice’s revealing op-ed explains why the Obama administration hid the truth about North Korea from the American people – they were simply willing to tolerate a communist nation that still is technically at war with the United States acquiring nuclear weapons.
